PhD Dissertation Help
A dissertation is an extension of 10 to 20,000 words on a subject selected by a department or by the student him or herself. It is typically split into chapters and may include headers and subheadings, often numbered (but not necessarily), as in a report.Dissertations address a specific research topic and may report on either an empirical or literature-based investigation.
Although a dissertation is intended to address the issue, the process is more essential than the actual results. Even if you don’t generate any useable data, you may still obtain an initial in your dissertation – as long as you can demonstrate you have learnt about the process and are able to analyze it and understand why you have not succeeded so well in answering the issue.
Parts of a dissertation
These should always be discussed with your supervisor since they may be different. This is a typical, but not an exclusive arrangement.
Title
It’s more important to do this properly than you may imagine. You risk the dissertation missing emphasis or coherence and do not highlight particular points if you settle on a title that is too general.
Create a title that pushes you to focus, ask a specific question or compare something in particular.
You could have a two part title where the first half, the main title, is brief and maybe fairly broad in nature, but the second portion is highly targeted.
Alternatively, the primary title becomes ambiguous, obscure or seemingly contradictory, followed by a subtitle that explains all this. This makes the reader interested in reading more.
Abstract
This is a brief overview of the substance of the dissertation and possibly its conclusions, typically around 300 words in length. Abstracts are stored in a database so that people looking for information of interest may immediately discover if your effort will help them or not.
Despite the fact that it is at the beginning of the study, if it is written at the very end, it is much simpler – and will save you a lot of effort – to guarantee that the contents of the abstract are precisely the same as those of the dissertation.
Introduction
The list should be (this list is not exclusive):
- Research goals and objectives.
- Research context.
- Any important terminology utilized are explained.
- Recognition, if required, of any limits or exclusions (this research will not include…);
- Description of the dissertation structure/shape.
Review of literature
Your dissertation becomes part of the current research and literature and supports your choice of topic. For further details, see the Literature Reviews page.
Methodology
This is a description of how the research question is to be answered. You must describe what techniques you are employing to gather, analyze and defend any choices you have made about further literature.

Conclusions and discussions
If you have conducted an empirical research to generate primary data, they are usually written as two distinct parts – possibly with a section called ‘results’ first. If you have researched literature utilizing secondary data, it tends to be written together (this is not a strict rule and you should always discuss it with your supervisor).
The results explain to the reader your data and the outcomes of your research. They should be obvious and reasonable.
The debate is the major element of your dissertation. It should not include fresh information or data, but look at the significance of your results. You should also explain any issues and why they occurred and how they may be handled or prevented in future study.
Finalization (and sometimes recommendations)
How effectively have your study answered this question? Summarize what you can say about your dissertation title currently. Suggest from here where the study could lead.
References/bibliography
- A reference list is a list of all works that you quoted or that you referred to specifically in your dissertation. • A bibliographical list is a list of all the works you read or partially read in your preparations of your dissertation, including those which you did not mention at all, but which helped you to formulate your thoughts or to provide additional information.
You may sometimes merge the two departments – verify it with your boss.
If you are concerned about the quality of your referring, please check our reference pages.
Appendices
These contain everything the marker want to see but not in the main text. This typically contains blank surveys, letters, consent letters, and any original statistical analyses (tables).
All your raw data such as completed surveys or entire transcripts of interviews are seldom requested. You will be advised by your supervisor.
